At first I wasn't sure what the cartridges were for and it wasn't clear. Basically the book it comes with is built into the memory and doesn't need one. To play each of these books though, you need the cartridge. My 3 year old loves the importance of popping these in and out to play the book. 3 different books to keep her amused. An absolute bargain - well worth it.
