I read this book all in one go and couldn't save it for every day in Lent. So funny, especially as it's written by a vicar! The next time I'm sitting in a 'churchy' group with the elegantly draped piece of voile on the floor (with obligatory candle, etc) being expected to pour out my soul with the others in the circle, I will think of this and probably not be able to keep a straight face. I used to think it was just me who thought 'What are they going on about?' now I know vicars feel that way sometimes,too! A laugh-out-loud book that's can also be deeply touching. Highly recommended to 'churchys' and 'non-churchys' alike. You'll find yourself 'strangely warmed' somewhere, somehow!

I laughed out loud over this book more than once, recognising the scenarios described - and Rumsey writes delightfully. Coming from a clerical family myself, I felt thoroughly at home with his mixture of reverence, thoughtfulness and humour. There are not many Lent books that make me feel I shall want to read them again, but this is different. One thing I value about the Church of England is its willingness to laugh at itself (e.g. the cartoons in the Church Times): humour helps to keep us grounded and sane. So does this book. And I would rather give it to somebody teetering on the edges of faith than many other worthy solemn tomes. The Bishop of Durham calls the author's spirituality 'deep but refreshingly different', which is well put.

Very humorous observations by a skilled writer and experienced priest on aspects of the Christian life. It should cause readers to look at their own lives and then both take themselves less seriously and commit to the Faith more authentically. One of the 40 short chapters is designed to be read each day in Lent. This is far from heavy, but not as lightweight as a first glance might suggest.
