| Customer Reviews: A charming little story perfect for younger readers April 23, 2010 Brida (Worcs) ROSE by Holly Webb is quite simply a charming little tale which would be enjoyed by younger readers.
Rose is an orphan who is taken into the home of Mr. Fountain, a magician. Slowly she begins to realise that she is surrounded by magic and that she may even be a little magical herself. However, the main drive of the story is that children begin to disappear, and it is upto Rose to try and save them.
As a quick easy read, this little book is very satisfying. I think it would better suit younger readers as the action is a little slow in developing. But there are times of comedy as Rose tries to adapt to her new life as a maid within the big house. More advances readers may perhaps get a little bored, but if they are looking for a sweet, short story, this could be right up their street.
Charming.
A great book to share with your mum February 20, 2010 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Rose is an orphanage girl and she discovers that she has magical powers, when she is working for Mr Fountain, who is chief magician to the king. This is the first book in the series of Rose's magical adventures and I think it is is based in Victorian times.
I thought that this book was a wonderful book to read on your own (if you're a good reader). I also really enjoyed my mum reading it to me. I could hardly wait to find out what happened next each evening.
I would recommend this book for girls aged 7 and over who like historical, magical or adventure books.

quite scary but very exciting January 2, 2010 Maddy and Kirsty (uk) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a really exciting read. I read it to my five year old and she said it was one of the best books that she has had read to her. In terms of age for self-reading, I would recommend 9-13 - as some of the language is quite complex. A word of warning though - this has some really frightening parts - Miss Sparrow kidnaps children and drinks their blood in order to remain youthful. This scared my daughter, although she reassures me that she is feeling better now, so much so, that we have pre-ordered the next in the series!
This is a well written novel (better than Harry Potter).
Simpler, girly Harry Potter August 13, 2009 bettysreviews 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read this book as it has been recommended for my ten year old daughter. I didn't get into it for the first few chapters, then enjoyed it a lot. It is simply and clearly written but I was a bit disappointed with the final chapter. I'd recommend this as a simpler girlier book than the Harry Potter books
